Solveig is a boutique retail store that specialises in handcrafted African design, in particular unique, once-off art fashion items and accessories. The concept for the interior by Haldane Martin was formed around the idea of trading under a tree – a common practice in rural Africa inspired by owner Solveig Martin’s extensive travels around the continent. To bring the concept to life, the interior design team created merchandising display and clothing rails out of existing copper plumbing and fittings in the shape of trees. The power for the retail store’s spotlights was articulated inside the copper tubing tree branches. Wooden finishes, bright orange crate storage covered in Shweshwe fabric, geometric-patterned wallpaper and a bright teal feature wall create a backdrop that speaks to the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Africa. A large mirror in the shape of Africa creates an iconic focal point. The final result is a space that manifests Solveig’s passion for African art and culture, upcycling and the spirit of individuality that form the essence of her brand.
