Haldane Martin designs Environ reception
Completed in 2013 – 2014
Beaconvale, Cape Town
Environ is one of only a few companies in the world with its own dedicated manufacturing facility. Maximum efficacy of formulations is maintained by prevention of exposure to light, heat, air and irradiation. Environ commissioned Haldane Martin to design the reception in 2013, and the rest of the offices in 2014, which will be completed in 2015.
Working closely with the inventor of the innovative skin care products Dr Des Fernandes, CEO Val Carstens, and director Jack Carstens, Haldane Martin developed an interior concept based on the intersection of art, science and beauty which is the essence of the Environ brand philosophy.
The concept is masterfully expressed through a number of bespoke furniture and interior elements that grace the reception area.
A 6.5m-long flowing organic shape, echoing the curves of a woman’s body forms the front of the main reception desk. The complex curved form was created using advanced 3D-modelling software Rhino 3D. The base for the form was manufactured from thousands of CNC-cut and numbered MDF profiles that were then laminated together and fared smooth by an experienced mould maker. This base was then clad with heat-formed and polished white Corian surfacing material.
The stunning reception desk is framed with a sheer wall of polished marble behind it, bearing Environ’s corporate identity.
Hovering lightly above the sinuous desk are three Raimond lights by Moooi, there spherical mathematical shapes reminiscent of the vitamin molecules found in Environ’s products.
Mounted to the wall on the left of the reception desk is a bespoke translucent white product display shelving system. This piece was inspired by a microscopic image of our skin cells. The underlying Voronoi geometry was once again created using Rhino 3D-modelling software with a Voronoi plugin. The shelving modules were fabricated from heat-formed white translucent Plexiglass. The Environ products are impactfully illuminated within the shelving cavities with hidden LED strip lights.
To the right of the reception desk in the waiting area is Haldane Martin’s iconic Songololo Sofa upholstered in natural skin-toned leather. In front of the sofa, Haldane Martin’s Polyhedra Coffee table resonates with the concept for the Environ interior with its structure inspired by soap bubbles. These two pieces rest on an organically shaped bamboo silk rug in the colour of Environ’s corporate identity orange.
The final touch to the reception area inspired by Art, Science and Beauty is the artwork “Vesica Piscis” by Lyndi Sales, made from radiant mirror Perspex.
